Both. It’s your responsibility to do research and choose the best career you can that fits closest to your interests. If you chose a good career and there are no jobs, I’ll stand by you any day. If you spent over $100,000 in loans on an art degree and can’t find work, you dug your own hole.

What if it was a good career when you started schooling and now isn’t, like say Investment Banking?

What if you attended an art institution that promised you there would be jobs when you graduated?  What if it turned out that they were lying through their teeth and your degree was completely worthless? And all they did was take your loan money, dump you on your ass with incredible debt and then move on to the next victim?

Generally, people who enroll in college are around 18 years old.  At 18 I did not really have a grasp of how the real world worked.  I was counting on the fact that the people around me, advising me, were trying to help me.  And that is an EASY position to abuse and it’s very sad that there are people who do so at the cost of other’s futures.

EDIT: I should add something.  My ex majored in biology because it was “useful.”  He hated it.  He was miserable.  And, even before the economy bottomed out, he had trouble finding a job that wasn’t ridiculously low paying.  And this helped make him into a sad, bitter person.
