Mostly delayed because…well, I don’t HAVE a reaction.

Maybe it makes me a bad fan or gets me points docked from my comic geek scorecard, but I just can’t bring myself to really feel strongly one way or another.  Maybe it’s because Watchmen doesn’t mean to me what it means to a lot of other fans.  Maybe it’s because I’ve been preparing for something like this since the movie came out.  Maybe it’s because I’m busy going “Well, at least it’s not a sequel.”

I don’t think the prequels are necessary.  Itsinthetrees has some great comments about how nostalgia works in the original story and I agree.  I think the story is self-contained, if there’s things we don’t know about and are curious about that’s part of the narrative. 

I’m also aware, though, that in the comics world, especially right now, it’s not what is “necessary” but what will make money.  And while I’m not sure if these prequels will make any money, I know that DC thinks they will and that’s why they’re going ahead with it. 

Mostly I’ve just been drinking in all of the reactions around me and kind of going “Oh, okay, that’s a good point!” in regards to both sides.  But in the end, I’m not going to shell out for the books, probably won’t read them until they’re collected and I can get them from the library and am comfortable in the end just ignoring their existence if I have to.  I’ve already disowned enough titles/story arcs/retcons (XORN.  WAS.  MAGNETO.) in my time that a series of Watchmen prequels are nothing.
